Q. Who are the Faeries?

A. For more than 25 years Faeries have been coming together in community to create magic. Faerie gatherings happen all over the world, principally in the United States. Faeries came out of a groups formed in the 1970s to bring gay men together in a space different from the bars and nightclubs. We come together to celebrate our distinctive and unique qualities and to let our true selves be free. The faeries are an opportunity to create abundance from our many talents and gifts. The faeries are also an opportunity to create a true classless society where no one is identified by their wealth or lack thereof and where no one has power or authority over one another.

Q. What happens at a Faerie Gathering?

A. The gathering is set up by volunteers and what happens is generally up to the participants. The only planned event is the daily Heart Circle. Everyday at 10:00am, we'll blow the conch and men will gather to speak from their hearts to others in the circle. After Heart Circle it's up to the group as to what happens. If you wish to facilitate a ritual, a workshop, a meal or anything else you are most welcome and will be showered with various forms of appreciation for doing so.
The possibilities are endless and include:
Trips to nearby islands for snorkeling and swimming, Meditation,
Exercise, Hiking, Rituals, Workshops , Community Meeting,
Kick Boxing Lessons, Making Music / Drumming, Massage, Talent Show, Fashion Shows, Manly Activities, Swimming, Boating, Reading, Poetry, Puppy Piles, Napping, Art Projects & Yoga

Q. What is a Heart Circle?

A. The Heart Circle is one of the most important elements of Faerie Gatherings. It's very simple and involves everyone sitting around in a circle. The circle has no head and no foot. There are no leaders, only participants. There is a talisman, a sacred object from the land or something someone brought, that is passed from person to person, from hand to hand. Each person who holds the talisman has the opportunity to speak to the circle from his heart. Whatever he is feeling in his heart, he can express to the circle. While he speaks the rest of the circle listens with an open heart. No one comments or interrupts. If you do not want to speak, just hold the talisman for a moment and pass it on, but feel the welcoming energy and love of the circle.

A Heart Circle can consist of 2 or 3 people or the entire gathering. It often starts with a small number, say 10, and grows as the energy blossoms. It can last 20 minutes or 4 hours, though most often we'll finish around lunchtime. The Heart Circle is where we have a rare opportunity see each other's souls.

Q. When should I register?

A. We can accept registrations up to the last minute if space is available. The maximum number of participants will be about 55. More space is available if we know at least one week in advance. For planning purposes please register by January 15, 2012.

Q. What is the cost?

A. The cost for each day/night is $US236. Total cost for the gathering is $US360. Please pay the full amount, in cash, prior to your arrival as the organizers will need to pay for accommodations and transfers in advance.
Please know that a small portion of the full fee helps subsidize the cost for Faeries from some less developed nations like Cambodia and Indonesia who otherwise could not attend. We appreciate your paying the full amount.

Q. What are the accommodations like?

A. Most accommodations are two person bamboo bungalows. Facilities (toilet, sink, shower) are included with most as well as a queen sized bed and mosquito netting. The huts are not air conditioned, but fans are provided and the evenings are comfortable for sleeping. The beds are Thai style and not soft and mushy like Western style beds. Think firm.

Q. Will I have to share a bed with someone I don't know?

A. Maybe, maybe not. Some of the bungalows have double beds, and some have two single beds. You can ask to be roommates with a particular person. If you simply must have your own private space, tell us that and we will try to accommodate you. It will cost you more. Remember, it's fun to share!

Q. Are meals included?

A. All meals are included in the price. You may wish to occasionally sample from the local restaurants and cafes, so bring a little extra cash for those special nights out. The owners of our space are Muslim and the food they prepare will be both Thai and Halal as well as mostly vegetarian with seafood options (the owners of the place are Thai fisherman). This way everyone can eat what we prepare.

Q. Will all the meals be prepared for us or will we help?

A. Because we'll be staying in accommodations where the families normally prepare meals for their guests, it is unusual for them to allow foreigners into the kitchen.

Q. What is the island like?

A. Koh Yao Yai island is one of a few Muslim places in primarily Buddhist Thailand. There are about 10,000 people living on the island. They are very friendly and welcoming. Because it has not been discovered by tourists, the island is still mostly agricultural and undeveloped. There are a few villages and many families do cater to the tourists that do come. Last year the first hotel on the island was under construction. There are a few cars, but motorcycles are the primary transport.

In previous years we have had quite a few local fishermen and residents participate in our fashion show as well as the no-talent show, donning outfits and generally having a great time. We have donated money to the local school and had celebrations together with the local people.

Q. Are there ATM machines, or do places take credit cards or travelers cheques?

A. No, credit cards are usually not accepted. Bring cash to pay for your gathering registration fee, any extra meals you may have outside of the gatherings, shopping, to pay for excursions or motorcycle rentals, snorkeling, etc. Prices are cheap so you won't need a lot of cash. You can get cash at the ATMs at the Phuket airport
or in Phuket Town.

Q. Are there telephones, cell/mobile phones, Internet?

A. There are no land lines. Cell phones surprisingly and regrettably work on the beach. There are no Internet cafes or Internet access (no Wi-Fi). Some proprietors are trying to get Internet access for their customers, so there is hope for Internet junkies. If you simply must surf the Internet, you can hop on one of the twice daily boats to Phuket and return in only 5 hours.

Q. Are there other hangouts, things to do, places to go, people to

see? Is there SHOPPING???

A. Koh Yao Yai is relatively undeveloped, though there are small shops, schools and restaurants. Think simple. There will be excursions, depending on what people want to do. Options include snorkelling, diving, and even shopping in Phuket or on Koh Phi Phi. The great thing about this is you make it happen!

Q. Are there scholarships available?

A. This year we will use a sliding scale (pay what you can afford) rather than scholarships. If you can afford the airfare to travel to Thailand from another country, we hope you will pay the full price of $27 (1,000 baht) per day, or 10,000 baht for the entire gathering. If you are from a developing country, such as the ASEAN countries, we ask you to pay as much as you can afford. We ask a minimum of 200 baht per day at the low end of the scale. This means that if you stay for the entire 10 days, the cost will be a minimum of 2,000 baht, a maximum of 10,000 baht. Please let us know if you are interested in coming, are living in Thailand or a nearby country, and don't have any money for the journey or the gathering.

Q. Who is coming to this gathering?

A. There will be about 30-50 of us from the USA, France, Greece, Holland, Germany, Belorus, Estonia, Australia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, and who knows where else. Many have attended other faerie gatherings, but for many this is their first experience of faerie culture.

Q. Who is organizing this?

A. This is organized by the nonprofit foundation, Eurofaerie (www.eurofaerie.org) based in Amsterdam. Any remaining profits from the gathering will go into a fund for scholarships for the next gathering.

Q. Should I worry if I have health concerns?

A. This is a rather isolated island without any hospital or emergency care. If you have health problems that could require sudden urgent care, medications requiring refrigeration, special dietary needs, etc., this may or may not be the gathering for you.

There is a medical clinic on the island that has basic medicines including antibiotics and Thai health care workers. A visit costs about US$2 and the staff are friendly and helpful. If you need further medical care, there are hospitals in Phuket, which is a ferry boat ride (or a speedboat in an emergency) away. Please consult with the organizers if you have any questions regarding health issues.

Q. Will there be group sex? Will I fall in love?

A. Maybe. The faeries are sex-positive, but this is not a sex party.
Some romances bloom at the gathering, and some people have sex.
It is up to you to make these things happen if you want them. A
gathering is what the participants make it. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet men from very different cultures, and experience them first-hand (so to speak).

There and Back Again - Traveling to and from the gathering

去集会然后又回来

Travel to Thailand:

Plan your inbound flights all the way to Phuket. Most inbound flights go to Bangkok and you will have to transfer there after clearing immigration and customs. Most North American flights land late at night, so plan on staying over in Bangkok one night before. Take Thai TG 209 to Phuket from Bangkok. It leaves at 9:10am (check schedules in advance). It's only an hour flight to Phuket from Bangkok. There are earlier and later flights on Thai and other airlines, but the 9:10am works best.

There are many new budget airlines now with fares as low as US$100 for a round trip Bangkok-Phuket. Check airasia.com, Thai Airways, Nok Air, Bangkok Airways and others for best fares. Thai Airways is about US120 each way.

泰国之旅:

计划好乘坐你的国内航班远道而来普吉岛,大多数国内航班多只能到达曼谷, 因此你需要在曼谷办完清关手续以后再专机。大多数的北美航班着陆都是在深夜,因此,需要在头天晚上在曼谷过夜。乘坐泰航TG 209从曼谷到普吉,一般都是早上九点十分起飞(请提前查对你的日程表),从曼谷到普吉只要飞行一个小时。另外一些更早或更晚的航班或其他航线可以到达,但是九点十分那一趟是最佳的。

The important thing is to arrive in Phuket on the 2nd no later than 12 noon if you want to travel with the group to the island.

You can also get to Phuket by overnight train and/or bus. It's cheaper and will take 8-12 hours. The express bus is 800 baht each way (about US$20). The train is slightly more and involves a 3 hour minibus ride at 5am from the train station to Phuket - not the most pleasant trip.

重要的是如果你想和团队一起到达攀牙到的话,到达普吉机场的时间最好不要超过一月2号中午十二点。

From Phuket to Koh Yao Yai:

Koh Yao Yai is an island in the Andaman sea directly East of Phuket Island, about 1 hour by ferry. There are two ferries each day, except on Fridays when there is only one at 10am. The vast majority of us will take the 2:00pm boat. Last year a dozen of us pooled our money and hired a private speedboat from Phuket to Koh Yao Yai.

On February 2nd, we'll travel by bus from the Phuket airport at 12:00 noon to the port. If you are traveling by rail or bus, please plan to arrive at the Tien Sin port in Phuket Town before 2:00 pm.

If you are not traveling with the group from the airport on February 2nd: the ferry leaves from Tien Sin Pier at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Click here to download a map to find the pier. Tell your driver / motorbike boy you are going to Tien Sin Pier for the Koh Yao Yai boat to ‘LOH JAAK PIER'. It takes about 1 hour and the fare is 120 baht (US$4.00) per person (one way). 从普吉岛到攀牙岛

Leaving Koh Yao Yai:

There is a morning boat at 8:00 am and an afternoon boat at 15:00. Plan on 3 hours to get from Koh Yao Yai to the Phuket airport. Don't book a morning flight out of Phuket unless you are prepared to spend the night before in Phuket away from Koh Yao Yai.
